Historic Red Devil run ends in regional semifinals

Subhead

A historic season for the Chapel Hill Red Devils – one that saw them attain the best record in school history and make their fourth regional tournament appearance – unfortunately came to an end against the regional tournament’s most experienced team.

The fourth-ranked Red Devils fell in their regional semifinal against sixth-ranked Ponder – the only team in the regional tournament that had claimed a state title – 66-58.

Ponder utilized their defensive philosophy of taking away a team’s best option – one that Lion head coach J.D. Sullivan likened to cutting the head off of a snake – to prevent Chapel Hill from getting a wide open shot from beyond the three-point arc. Chapel Hill managed to sink six three-pointers for the game.

Braden Buchanan led the Devils with 21 points. A.J. Ramirez added 13 and Max Daniel put in eight points.

Timber Crider led Ponder with 20 points on the night. Carter Eddy and Max Hutcherson both added 15.

Ponder would go on to win the regional title with a 28-24 win over Paradise – their third win over the Panthers this season.

Chapel Hill’s season ends at 35-2. For more, see Wednesday’s issue of the Tribune.
